History of the convent
The first mission convent St.Josephs Convent Jalandhar started by CMC Ernakulam Province in 1958 showed rapid growth. By 1982 there were eleven established houses in the diocese of Jalandhar, Bijnor, Jammu Kashmir, Rajkot and Delhi. Those houses together formed, a region. It was named Pushparam region taking St.Little Flower as its patroness. Sr.Sinoby served the region as the first regional superior. As the region was formed it became necessary to have a house in Kerala for recruitment and as holiday home for the sisters from the mission. An existing building on a land of 40 cent was bought in Alwaye. Thus the convent Pushpasadan came into existence. This convent was blessed and inaugurated on 8th Dec. 1982. Rosannamma from Koonammavu who had served in the mission for some time was appointed as the first superior of the convent. Sr.Laetus the ex-provincial of Ernakulam and Teresinamma from Kandanad were the members. Junior sisters from time to time were here for their study.
Since the building lacked space, additional rooms were constructed. This new block was blessed by the then pronuncio Augustino Cacciavillan on 16 July 1985. Liberthamma of Ernakulam Province was appointed as the superior of Pushpasadan on 21 May 1986. Rosannamma was called back to Mother Province. Pushparam will cherish the loving service of Rosannamma. Pushparam was raised to a province in 1986, Mother Ricci as the 1st provincial. By now Ernakulam the mother province expressed its inability to provide the service of its members in Pushpasadan. On 2nd April 1989 Sr.Elphege took charge as the superior of Pushpasadan from Pushparam province. Liberthamma and Tersinnamma said good bye to Pushpasadan on 20th May 1989. Praiseworthy was the selfless service of Liberthamma for three years and Teresinamma for seven years to Pushparam Province through Pushpasadan convent. Pushparam gratefully remembers the love and care it received from the Mother province during the infantile stage of their newly formed province.
Additional constructions were done from time to time to get more space for candidates and for the sisters on holidays. A plot of 41/4 acres was bought in Ashokapuram in October 1990. This land is mainly meant for cultivation.
On 18th April 1992 Sr.Pushpa became the superior. During her period a compound wall was constructed for the plot in Ashokapuram. A well was also dug there to make the cultivation more fruitful. On 10 August another plot of 35 cents adjacent to the convent was bought. Sr.Pushpa handed over the charge to Sr.Lintella on 30th June 1995. For better accommodation for the candidates and for a hostel for students a block containing spacious dormitory and refectory was constructed. Sr.Agnes became the superior on 9 July 1998.
In the convent from the very beginning daily mass except on Sunday is arranged from the parish, nearby religious houses and the apostolic seminary, Mangalpuzha or the purpose of getting vocations, various methods have been adopted. Come and see programmes, vocations camps, vocation retreats etc were some of those. Spoken English classes and tutorial classes were conducted, hostel for students of the local colleges is run for the same purpose. Visits to schools, colleges and parishes are made to meet and talk with the young girls. Vestition and first profession of the candidates are recently conducted in the Parish (Aluva)with the same view. Besides these efforts, the members pray in-groups for this intention.
Sisters show keen interest to establish cordial neighbourhood relation. Parish and parish activities became the concern of the convent. Sisters were always ready for the Sunday catechism classes. In 1994 sisters expanded their catechetical work to St.Little Flower church, Puthuvassery which continues with full enthusiasm. Needy persons are searched out and help is rendered in cash and in kind in marriage and in construction of the houses. Every year the feast of St.Little Flower the patroness day is celebrated on a large scale. The Catholics of the neighbourhood and the nuns and priests in the locality are invited. Every year convent hosts the October meeting of the parish unit to which the convent belongs so that the sentiments of the patroness day will be shared with them too. Also the members of the unit are collected here once in lent for a days retreat to prepare them for the great feast of Resurrection. Pushpasadan serves as a link between Pushparam province and Kerala Provinces especially Mother Provinces of Ernakulam Angamaly and above all the Generalate and the betweeen the sisters in the mission and their families in Kerala.
