Apostolate of Education
Apostolate of Education
From the beginning, education has been our chosen field of apostolate. It is not just a profession but a sacred call, a great apostolate through which we participate in the teaching mission of the Church. Our aim, in the pursuit of academic and professional excellence, should be the total formation of the human person as much for her/his own enrichment as for the service of the society and the nation in the spirit of Christ. Therefore we must be eager to impart, along with technical and scientific knowledge, the redeeming light of wisdom to meet God the eternal truth. We began our ministry of education imbibing the vision of St Kuriakose Elias Chavara who started schools attached to all syrian churches of that time, realizing that “without removing ignorance, the seed and the seedlings of holy people will not be formed.”(St. Chavara).
The future of a person is affected mostly by the experiences and the training one receives in his/ her infancy and childhood. Realizing the importance of laying the foundation for Christian formation at these levels, sisters should take special interest to impart education to children at Nursery and Primary levels.
It is our serious responsibility to impart convictions and values in an appealing and acceptable manner to the youth of today. They are led astray by becoming preys to all sorts of violence and bad habits without finding any meaning in life due to deep loneliness and lack of love. This demands our growing awareness of their world, their language, their hopes, etc. and we have to change our strategy and approach to guide them in their quest for real happiness and fulfillment and enable them to participate in the building up of the community and of the nation. The exhortation of Pope St John Paul II, “The consecrated should not alienate themselves from the schools and common fields of education because of the crisis and other difficulties they face in this field” should inspire us to work with zeal in this field.
Regarding Educational Institutions
Schools and colleges are the most important platforms to mould the future of many generations. It is through these ‘abodes of knowledge’ that we have to radiate the gospel values. With the awareness that we are called to give the good news of the Kingdom to all, we should impart quality education to all especially to the poor and the marginalized to empower them.
Our educational institutions are to be transformed into temples transmitting the presence of God and family spirit. We should cultivate truth and justice and foster the spirit of cooperation and communion in the school/college community. We must always remain faithful in our efforts to convert our fields of education into ideal venues of social change as well as Christian formation without being concerned about name and fame.
Our Educational Institutions should always maintain the identity of Catholic education by exercising our right and responsibility in proclaiming the Gospel and in imparting formation according to Christian values, although there are children of different castes and creeds.
